BG3 Point Buy Calculator

BG3 point buy calculator: spend 27 points, add your +2 and +1 bonuses and see final ability scores, modifiers and suggested spreads for every class.

This BG3 point buy calculator follows the character creation rules of Baldur's Gate 3 since the full release: 27 points, base scores from 8 to 15, and a free +2 and +1 on top. It shows your final scores and modifiers as you click, warns you about unspent points and wasted odd scores, and loads a suggested spread for each class.

How to use the calculator

  1. Pick a class if you want a starting point. On a fresh sheet its suggested spread loads at once; otherwise press Use suggested spread.
  2. Raise or lower each ability with the + and − buttons. A button turns off at 8, at 15, or when you can't afford the next step.
  3. Put the +2 on one ability and the +1 on a different one. If you choose the ability that already has the other bonus, the two swap.
  4. Check Your character for level 1 hit points, attack bonus and spell save DC, plus any warnings.
  5. Copy the build code to save the spread, then paste it back later to load it again.

Point costs and modifiers

Base score Total cost Modifier
8 0 −1
9 1 −1
10 2 +0
11 3 +0
12 4 +1
13 5 +1
14 7 +2
15 9 +2

Every step from 9 to 13 costs 1 point, while 14 and 15 cost 2 points each. The modifier is the score minus 10, divided by 2 and rounded down, so only even scores raise it. A 15 plus the +2 bonus gives 17, the highest score you can start with.

The +2 and +1 bonuses

In the full release your race no longer decides your bonuses. Every race gets +2 for any ability and +1 for a different ability, and you choose both. They can't go on the same ability, which is why 17 is the cap. Guides written during Early Access may still list fixed racial bonuses; those no longer apply. Origin companions start with preset scores, but you can change them with a respec.

Suggested spreads by class

These spreads are our suggestions, not the game's built-in defaults. Each one spends all 27 points and puts the +2 on the main ability. Scores include the bonuses.

Class STR DEX CON INT WIS CHA
Barbarian 17 14 16 8 10 8
Bard 8 16 14 8 10 17
Cleric 8 14 16 8 17 10
Druid 8 14 16 10 17 8
Fighter (Strength) 17 14 16 8 10 8
Fighter (Dexterity) 8 17 16 8 14 10
Monk 8 17 14 8 16 10
Paladin 17 8 14 8 10 16
Ranger 8 17 16 10 14 8
Rogue 8 17 14 10 14 12
Sorcerer 8 14 16 8 10 17
Warlock 8 14 16 8 10 17
Wizard 8 14 16 17 10 8

How hit points, attack bonus and spell DC are worked out

  • Hit points at level 1 are your class's base plus your Constitution modifier: 12 for Barbarians, 10 for Fighters, Paladins and Rangers, 8 for Bards, Clerics, Druids, Monks, Rogues and Warlocks, and 6 for Sorcerers and Wizards. You add the Constitution modifier again at every level.
  • Attack bonus is your proficiency bonus (+2 at levels 1 to 4) plus the modifier of the ability you attack with.
  • Spell save DC is 8 + proficiency bonus + the modifier of your spellcasting ability: Intelligence for Wizards, Wisdom for Clerics, Druids and Rangers, and Charisma for Bards, Paladins, Sorcerers and Warlocks.

Tips

  • Odd scores only pay off if you plan a feat that adds +1 later. Most classes get a feat at levels 4, 8 and 12, and Fighters get one at 6 as well. Feats can't raise a score above 20.
  • Dropping an ability to 8 is fine when your class and party never rely on it.
  • Respec costs 100 gold at Withers in your camp. He joins your camp in Act One, and he stops offering respecs once you reach the High Hall at the end of the game.

Frequently asked questions

How many points do you get for point buy in BG3?

You get 27 points. Every ability starts at 8, and raising one to 15 costs 9 points. Points you don't spend at character creation can't be saved for later.

Can you put the +2 and +1 on the same ability in BG3?

No. The +2 and the +1 have to go on two different abilities. That is why the highest starting score is 17 rather than 18.

What is the highest ability score you can start with in BG3?

The highest starting score is 17: a base of 15 plus the +2 bonus, which gives a +3 modifier. Feats can raise it to 20 later, and some items and elixirs push scores higher.

Do racial ability bonuses still exist in Baldur's Gate 3?

Not as fixed bonuses. Since the full release every race gets the same free +2 and +1, which you place wherever you like. Early Access tied the bonuses to your race.

Is 14 or 15 better in BG3 point buy?

Both give a +2 modifier, but 15 costs 2 more points. Buy 15 only if a bonus or a later +1 feat will take it to 16; otherwise 14 is the better deal.

Can you change your ability scores later in BG3?

Yes. Withers in your camp resets a character to level 1 for 100 gold, and you can then pick new ability scores, class, skills and feats. He can't change race, origin or background.
